Until June 2020 there are two different ways to earn a DTM (only for members who were Toastmasters PRIOR to the Pathways program being rolled out in their districts). For those who became members AFTER the rollout of Pathways there is only one method to earn a DTM.

These two methods are: the Legacy method (for Toastmasters who were members BEFORE rollout and PATHWAYS (for all Toastmasters).

UNDER PATHWAYS

Within the Tutorials and Resources section in Base Camp, members can access the Project Description for the Distinguished Toastmaster project. Once a member has completed a path and three levels of another path, they can have this project added to their Base Camp account; this request can be submitted to World Headquarters by phone or email .
(educationprogram@toastmasters.org)

Once the request has been processed they will then have full access to the project guidelines and instructions. World Headquarters does not pre-approve the project. Judgment calls as to whether the member's plan/work fulfills the project requirements when uncertain is up to the club's vice president education not World Headquarters. Such situations are best handled at the club level by whatever means the club best sees fit.

The requirements for the DTM (Pathways) award are:
  • Complete two unique learning paths.
  • Serve as a club officer for 12 months, (If your club has six-month terms for officers, you can fulfill this requirement by serving as a club officer twice, but you don’t have to do it in consecutive terms) and participated in the preparation of a Club Success Plan while serving in this office.
  • Serve as a club mentor or coach.
  • Serve as a club sponsor or conduct a Speechcraft or Youth Leadership program.
  • Serve as a district officer for one year.
  • Complete the DTM project. (Members are required to create and implement a project of their own design, in which they demonstrate the skills and expertise they have gained.)
District officer and club support role may not be one used previously.

The Distinguished Toastmaster project in Pathways is designed to review the content of all Level 5 projects and—much like HPL projects—support members in creating a large project of their own design. The primary difference between the DTM project assignment and the HPL assignment is that the DTM project must benefit an organization. This can be the member’s employer, another nonprofit organization or any organization the member chooses. The Distinguished Toastmaster project is intended to be a project of one's own creation and design; as such, it is preferred that members not use projects and roles that are pre-defined by Toastmasters International. There is no official policy prohibiting members from applying projects and roles pre-defined by Toastmasters International toward an Distinguished Toastmaster project though, provided they follow the guidelines in the DTM project.
